LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Los Angeles will offer more than 10,000 jobs to
teens and young adults this summer, up from 7,500 jobs that were offered last
summer, city officials said today.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said studies show that one out of five youths
aged 18-24 in Los Angeles are unemployed and not attending school.
``Remember, I was working every summer on my own, shining shoes and
selling newspapers, but I first started working for the public sector … for
Caltrans,’‘ Villaraigosa said. ``I worked on the freeways, landscaping on the
freeways with my orange jacket on.’‘
Participants in HIRE LA’s Youth 2007 Program will be trained by the
city’s Workforce Development System before working in full- and part-time jobs.
