VNC Town Hall Meeting, High Waves, Flooding, and Tsunami
On December 26, 2004, off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, the world witnessed the awesome power of a Tsunami. Since that time, increased concerns about the possibility of such a tsunami occurring in the Santa Monica Bay have led to more information and action by government agencies. Because we in Venice live in an exposed, low coastal plain, flooding from a combination of heavy rains, high tides, and high waves, or even a tsunami is probable. Learn the risks of how a landslide off of the Palos Verdes cliffs could cause a 42 foot tsunami wave to strike Venice, Marina del Rey, and Playa del Rey.
On Thursday, June 7th, at the Westminster School Auditorium, at 7:00 p.m., the Venice Neighborhood Council Task Force on "High Waves, Flooding, and Tsunamis" will be presenting a Town Hall meeting for the Venice community and other interested residents. You are cordially invited to attend. We believe that you will find this meeting interesting and informative. Councilman Bill Rosendahl will moderate the meeting, and City Channel 35 will videotape it.
FOCUS OF THE MEETING: AWARENESS and EDUCATION. Risks, and what you can do to mitigate them.
To achieve an awareness of the RISKS associated with flooding. Venice is in a low-lying, coastal flood plain and one of the most threatened cities in Los Angeles (see inundation map). A tsunami in the Venice/Marina del Rey/Playa del Rey area could affect up to 200,000 residents
How/where the public can obtain information and how will we be warned of the risks?
To present information regarding High Waves, High Tides, Flooding, and Tsunamis, from panelists from the police, fire, lifeguards, harbor, etc. who will interact with the affected communities by describing their role in a disaster, and answering questions
To discuss the flooding effects of rain, high waves, or a combination event. These effects depend upon the interaction of the amount of rain, wave heights, tide heights, the duration of time they last, and the topography of the area
Probability of occurrence and frequency: High Waves, High Tides and Flooding - Relatively High Probability with Damage; Tsunami
