Dear Neighbor-

GRVNC belongs to you! More and more neighbors are realizing this, and
coming to the committee meetings where the real work of the
organization is accomplished. There are new committees on affordable
housing, children and education, poverty and homelessness, Abbot
Kinney development, and outreach, as well as our ongoing committees on
parking and conservation. In fact, GRVNC will have as many committees
as there are passionate Venetians willing to get them up and running.

Our Land Use and Planning Committee (LUPC) continues to discuss its
role in providing thorough hearings on development proposals, as well
as its more general role of helping our community to be pro-active on
development.

Those of us who believe in democracy know that it is our
responsibility to keep it alive as a science and as an art, to be
practiced by large numbers of people. Thanks to those Venetians who
jump into the fray with energy and passion, patience and respect, so
we can relish and preserve the diversity that makes our Venice the
exciting and tumultuous place that it is.

Sheila Bernard

President, GRVNC

The GRVNC-sponsored toy drive succeeded in bringing some holiday cheer
to hundreds of children.

The toys were divided between the children of supermarket workers in
the area who have been locked-out or on strike, and the children who
live in the 15 HUD buildings (Holiday Venice) in Venice.

We delivered car loads of toys to the food and commercial workers
headquarters on Tuesday for distribution to the strikers. The union
had raised $10,000 for toys but they had all been distributed, so they
were thankful for our contribution.

Yesterday, we conducted a distribution at the Vera Davis Center to
parents. In all, about 100 children at Holiday Venice received gifts.

The GRVNC toys were augmented by toys donated by the Legal Aid workers
union. A full accounting will be presented at the next Neighborhood
Council Board meeting.

Special thanks should go to Elena Popp and Lydia Ponc , without whom
the toy drive would not have succeeded. Also, Kendra Moore, President
of the Holiday Venice Tenants Association and Michael Straeter,
President of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 1442
in Santa Monica.

Thank you to everyone who contributed toys or checks to the drive.
You're a real Santa!

Next year we need to start earlier into order to reach more people who
will donate either funds or toys.

A suggestion has been made that we conduct a book drive for kids
during the summer. Perhaps in conjunction with the celebration of the
founding of Venice (July 4).

Jim Smith
Treasurer
