1) Formal Board Statement Approved 10/8/2003

The Grassroots Venice Neighborhood Council wants to introduce you to the
2003-2004 Board of Officers for Grassroots Venice Neighborhood Council, of whom six are new to the board. They are: Greg Fitchitt; 1st Vice President; Chris Wood; 2nd Vice President; Elena Popp, Secretary; Jim Smith, Treasurer; Tom O'Meara, Communications Officer; Geographic Representatives: David Moring, Chris Williams, Kelly Willis, Bonnie Cheeseman, Dede Audet, and Alice Stek; At-large Representatives: Laddie
Williams, Sheila Bernard, Sabrina Venskus, Peggy Lee Kennedy, Lydia Ponce,
Suzanne Thompson, and Elinor Arthur.

This first meeting of the new Board serves as the beginning of an exciting
phase in our efforts to create a better Venice. It also closes a difficult time in our organization's brief history.

The election, while contentious, has given us a great opportunity to build on the base established by GRVNC's founders.

GRVNC's source of power - the stakeholders participating in the organization - increased dramatically, as 1241 votes were cast in this last election. That is almost twice as many as in the first election and 355 more than cast in Venice during the city's last election. Much of the increase is due to volunteers who rang doorbells and phoned their neighbors.

Their efforts resulted in the election of six new board members, who bring a wide variety of experience to GRVNC. Among them are a software engineer for GM's electric car division, an urban planner, a public interest lawyer, and a union organizer. They join the
already-diverse fifteen Venetians - including a realtor, several teachers, a doctor, and a commercial real estate developer - moving into their second year on the board.

It is unfortunate that a few individuals continue to question the legitimacy of the GRVNC election, even after the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment answered their questions about the process with thoroughly researched responses affirming that the voters were verified GRVNC stakeholders.

(For more details, read the DONE report:

)

Learning from the concerns raised by all sides, the board can run a better and bigger election next year.

Legitimacy and credibility are not earned just on Election Day and ignored the rest of the year. Actions over the next 10 months will go a long way to developing those qualities further, to the greater good of the Venice community.

The election is over and the board can look forward to tackling the concrete problems facing the community. Armed with high ideals, respect for all concerned, and a commitment to winning measurable progress, the new board will succeed in dealing with the problems.
