DISASTER AWARENESS & PREPAREDNESS

The Disaster Preparedness Task Force, of the Neighborhood Committee, of the Venice Neighborhood Council, is presenting a brochure to be distributed to all Venetians as a function of our Mission to identify the best ways to educate and encourage the stakeholders of Venice to take action and develop family emergency plans.

There are a lot of really great materials/brochures on Disaster Preparedness, offered by the City of L.A., County of L.A., FEMA, The Red Cross, etc. This document is not meant to replace any of those. Rather, it is a very high level, 1 page, 2 sided document that refers to other, more detailed sources of information but that was tailored specifically to Venice, including phone numbers to call and evacuation routes and sites in Venice, and to highlight the fact that we are in an area of high risk for disasters such as Tsunami, flooding and high waves, especially as compared to other areas of Los Angeles. If this document is all that a Venetian reads, it still leaves them much smarter than they otherwise would have been! :) It also let's us all know exactly where we can go for more information, for training and to obtain disaster preparedness kits, as well as information on which supplies are mandatory to have on hand at all times.

Self preparedness and education are key. We are on our own and responsible for ourselves in a disaster. Venetians need to know what to do and must have an evacuation/meeting plan for themselves and their family.
