Grass Roots Venice Neighborhood Council Announcement
####################################################
Apologies for so many emails lately, but I
hope that you appreciate the need for all
of this information to go out in a timely
manner.
The elections manager from the League of Women
voters, Jerry Kvasnicka, stopped by the Vera Davis
Center today to speak with me and Elections
Committee member Erma Darling about Election
Procedures.
Out of curiosity, I managed to get a factoid
out of him about credential checking at elections.
According to his sample size of about a third of
all neighborhood councils, 60% use self-affirmation
as a credential for voting. (That is where a voter
simply signs an affidavit under penalty of perjury
that they are a stakeholder.) He stated those
that don't use it are switching over because it
is much easier to run an election and Election
Committees are beginning to recommend it.
Also, he hasn't seen any voter challenges with it
so far. The Downtown LA Neighborhood Council (DLANC)
which represents 400,000 stakeholders, an incredible
size about 10 times that of GRVNC, uses
self-affirmation to enable voting rights.
Anyway, I have received some anecdotal complaints
about the way the special election was run last week
and I think it would be best to offer a mechanism
for all who wanted to do so to have the ability.
So, if any stakeholder would like to lodge an official
complaint about the way the election was run,
then please email elections@grvnc.org or stop by the
Vera Davis center and give your name, address, and
reason for challenge. The challenges will simply
be collected and made available to the board and to
D.O.N.E.
Thanks,
Tom

LINCOLN CENTER PROJECT REJECTED BY L.A. PLANNING
COMMISSION
The city of Los Angeles Planning Commission today
rejected the proposed Lincoln Center Development.
This project would have been the largest commercial
development in Venice. The pair of 6-story buildings
would have stretched from Lake Street along Lincoln
Blvd. to the alley next to Palms Blvd (the area that
Ralph's, Rite Aid, Ross and the old Wherehouse
building now occupy).
The GRVNC Board had previously voted to oppose this
project.
