Creating Jobs For Neighborhood Youth

Grass Roots Venice Neighborhood Council
Town Hall Meeting
Oakwood Recreation Center
Thursday, May 6th
6:00pm community dinner
7:30pm meeting

"Creating Jobs For Neighborhood Youth" is
the keynote subject of a Town Hall meeting
to be held Thursday, May 6, at the Oakwood
Recreation Center, 767 California Avenue in Venice.

Sponsored by the Grass Roots Venice Neighborhood
Council (GRVNC), the meeting will feature an address
by Richard & Thomas Schiffer, owners of Abbot's Pizza
in Venice. The Schiffer brothers employ local youth
in their 10 year-old business, seeing this as a way to

teach basic job skills and respect for one another.
In an area with significant gang activity and youth
joblessness, GRVNC supports such efforts and
encourages other local businesses to reach out to the
youth in our community.

"This is an excellent opportunity for businesses and
community members to learn and network about some
positive initiatives for our youth," said Sheila
Bernard, GRVNC President.

Other organizations, such as Venice YouthBuild,
which provides education, job training and placement
to at-risk youth, and Venice Arts in the Neighborhood
will make presentations at the Town Hall meeting.
In addition, the public will be provided the
opportunity to comment on these subjects, or anything
else of interest and concern to the community. Food
provided by Oakwood Senior Citizens will be served at
6 p.m., with the program beginning at 7pm.

RSVP for community dinner to rsvp@grvnc.org. For more
information on GRVNC please visit www.grvnc.org.

Special Election

Thursday, May 6, 7:00 PM
Oakwood Recreation Center
767 California Ave
Venice

DETAILS:

At the Executive committee meeting on April 7,
a stakeholder submitted a petition signed by
at least 50 stakeholders to hold a vote on
an initiative to amend the bylaws.

Basically, the initiative contains seven provisions,
each to be voted on separately, which seek
to amend the bylaws to affect the way elections
could be run.

Exact bylaws language changes proposed are here:

http://grvnc.org/NewSite/organizing/BYLAWS%20CHANGE-short[1].htm

In order to have this election as soon as possible
and at a place where a large number of stakeholders
would already be gathered, the executive committee
negotiated some election details with the initiative
proponents.

Therefore, this is a cooperative endeavor that should
be seen as a sign of good faith towards those who are
not ready for the type of election rules that are
proposed to be used at the GRVNC Election on June
27. This is also a good faith measure on the part of
the initiative proponents.

In the interest of moving GRVNC forward and reaching
compromise or settling the issue for this year,
the standard procedure of convening the election
committee to create a separate set of
rules for this special election was not followed.
Therefore, rules previously created by the election
committee will fill in where the executive committee
and the initiative proponents left off last week.

This leeway-in-the-interest-of-rapprochement was felt
acceptable, especially in light of the fact that the
board is expected to have to approve by 2/3 vote the
results of this Special Election anyway.

Tom
