[grvnc] Board Meeting and Park Name Instant Runoff Voting results

Grass Roots Venice Neighborhood Council Announcement
****************************************************

To all stakeholders: If your last name starts with
either a "D" or an "N," then please keep an eye out
this week for a letter from GRVNC!

View the letter you are receiving:
http://grvnc.org/NewSite/Commitees%20Folder/Elections2004/StakeHolderLetter.htm

The elections committee chair is seeking to empanel
a "citizen jury" type of elections committee and so
the letters D and N were randomly picked. If your
last name starts with either of these letters, you
are being asked to volunteer on the elections
committee.

Since choosing people randomly is designed to get a
wide cross section of opinion and diversity, it is
important that you attend the Elections Committee
Meeting at the Venice Library on Saturday, March 13
at 2:00 PM to learn about how you can contribute
to a great election this June. There you will be
given information about what will be expected of the
committee and then you can accept or decline to
volunteer. I know it will be another beautiful day:
do I need to bring food to get you to come?

Also, be sure to check out the information on
http://grvnc.org about "Citezen's Deliberative
Councils" in the "Toolbox" section.

Thanks,
Tom

Venice Library Park Name Election

Instant Runoff Voting is a simple voting method that
ensures the winner has majority support and eliminates

the effect of spoiler candidates. Selecting a winning

candidate also is faster and less expensive, since a
separate runoff election does not nee to be held.

In summary, had a normal "most votes wins" election
been held, "Sonny Zorro Park" would have been selcted
becasue it registered the most (22%) support, even
though it was not a majority. However, because we
used IRV, "Peace Park" is the winner with 56% support,
a majority.

And voters who liked all the other names better than
either "Sonny Zorro" or "Peace Park" still got a
chance to choose between them even though their first
choice had to leave the race. That means no choice on
the ballot "spoiled" any of the others.

This is a great way to vote!
