TOWN HALL BRINGS VENICE TOGETHER
TO DISCUSS DEVELOPMENT, FREE SPEECH

Around 300 people attended a Venice Town Hall meeting,

Thursday, to discuss and debate a proposed development

of Lincoln Center, a draft ordinance affecting Ocean
Front Walk artists and Abbot Kinney Blvd. traffic and
parking issues.

The Town Hall heard nearly 100 people speak during
the evening. The meeting was held at the Venice United

Methodist Church.

Most speakers opposed the Lincoln Center development,
which had already been voted down by the GRVNC Board.
However, the developers are still seeking approval
from the city of Los Angeles. A hearing will be held
on March 1.

Likewise, nearly all speakers opposed an ordinance
which would regulate the west side of the Venice
Boardwalk. Many called it an abridgment of free
speech.

Cindy Miscikowski, whose Los Angeles City Council
district includes Venice, also spoke. She said she
supports building more affordable housing in Venice
and "inclusionary" housing throughout Los Angeles.
Inclusionary housing would require affordable units
in new apartment construction.

Neighborhood Council members also voted by secret
ballot on two issues. They ratified GRVNC Board
actions to fill vacant officer seats, by an
overwhelming majority. Those ratified include:

President Sheila Bernard: Yes 67%, No 6%
Second Vice President Alice Stek: Yes 65%, No 7%
Government Relations Officer: Yes 68%, No 4%
District 3 Rep Jataun Valentine: Yes 65%, No 8%
District 4 Rep Dennis Hathaway: Yes 67%, No 4%
At Large Rep Geofrey Collins: Yes 75%, No 2%

They will serve until an election is held in June.

Also on the ballot were nominations for a name of the
park in the center median of Venice Blvd. adjacent to
the Abbot Kinney Library. The balloting for the park
was held under instant runoff rules where voters
rank their preferences. Of the 8 choices on the
ballot, "Peace Park" obtained majority support in the
final round, just ahead of "Sonny Zorro Park". The
description of the Peace Park proposal said:

"To encourage peace through out the world and in
our community, Peace Park would be a place to
meditate, contemplate and or to rejuvenate the
spirit with commissioned inspirational
art pieces memorializing Venice residents who
have passed on and left writings or
artwork that promotes peace."

The winning proposal will now be submitted to
Councilmember Miscikowski and to the
Recreation and Parks Dept.

The Town Hall featured a community meal, prepared
on-site by St. Joseph's Culinary School in Venice.
Before the meeting began, a cross-section of Venice
residents including architects and homeless,
actors and community activists, teachers and
business owners, sat down together at long
tables to chat and enjoy the meal.
